What is Divi Builder?
We build many WordPress websites using the Divi theme from Elegant Themes. This is because it’s so easy to edit if you haven’t got technical skills and your webdesigner is self-isolating. What is Divi and how easy is it to use?
WordPress is a content management system which allows you to publish content on a website that is often independent of whatever style you choose to apply to it. WordPress themes add that design layer to your content so you can have an article such as this, where the words stay as they are but by applying a different theme, it appears differently.
Divi is developed and maintained by Elegant Themes and has become their most successful product, eclipsing all the other themes they produce. This could be because it is a very versatile theme that can be used to make different designs and layouts.
Divi gives you the option to use”drag and drop”blocks to construct webpages without having to write a line of code. This makes assembling a web page a rapid process. On the other hand as a developer you can add your own custom CSS to give you even greater flexibility on the design.
Is it free?
Divi is a paid subscription service which gives you access to regular updates and a library of layouts. It’s worth the money even if it’s to have access to the updates. It’s not uncommon for WordPress themes to have security flaws and vulnerabilities so the best way to protect your site is to make sure you keep up to date with the latest fixes. In addition to that, you will need to make sure your WordPress core is updated regularly and for it to be compatible with your theme.
Back to the question: it could cost anywhere between $89 a year or you could get a lifetime membership for $249.
What other options are out there?
Divi wasn’t the first on the scene with WordPress page builders. The closest rival at the moment is Elementor that works in the same way but with a few subtle differences. While Divi is a theme and page builder, Elementor is a plugin that relies on third-party templates and plugins to achieve what Divi can out of the box. In terms of speed tests and efficiency Divi also pips Elementor to the post, though it hasn’t always been a smooth ride with Divi.
So why wouldn’t you just go with something like Wix or Squarespace? No reason really, unless you plan to hand over your site to a professional in the future. Sites like Wix get your site up and running but leave you little if any, flexibility to customise the functionality and in many cases, the design of the site. You are at their mercy to add new features, functionality and design. I wrote an article about DIY websites here which you might find useful reading
My top tip would be to get an account with GoDaddy and set up a managed WordPress site. Subscribe and install a Divi theme and take a look at the countless tutorials out there that will help you build the site you want. If you get stuck web designers like us would be happy to take over for you and when you want to switch to another agency it won’t be a hard sell to get them to pick up where the previous designer left off.
Or you could just give us a call and we’ll do all the heavy lifting for you.
